My Favorite Cut Out Sugar Cookies For Christmas!

My favorite cut out sugar cookie for Christmas always including six traditional Christmas characters: Santa Claus, Christmas sock, Christmas tree, snowman, reindeer and the ginger-man. With Christmas coming, I am so excited and happy to prepare for the coming festival party. So join us to kick off the Christmas holiday season of baking with my favorite cut out sugar cookie recipe for Christmas!

This set of Christmas cookie recipe was created by a friend. I got her permission to share and this will make your Christmas time fantastic and memorable, too!

Preparation

When it comes to baking, the first thing for us to do is to prepare. You need to prepare the good quality ingredients here I mentioned in my article below. Every baking lover knows the importance of high quality materials to cookies--they are the soul of your cookies.

Time: Make sure you have 3-4 hours to sit down and enjoy making your cookies, because this may take longer.

Cookie base recipe:

◎Butter: 140g (room temperate )

◎Icing sugar: 90g

◎Salt: 2g

◎Egg: one (about 60g)

◎Low-gluten flour: 280g

◎Baking powder: 2-5g

Icing recipe:

◎Protein powder: 15g

◎Icing sugar: 454g

◎Drinking water: 70g

◎Food coloring: red, green, blue, yellow, brown

Other necessary things:

◎oven

◎one kitchen whisk

◎one blinder

◎several bowls(one big bowl, then at least 11 smaller ones)

6 cookie cutters (If you want to make more, you can prepare more cookie cutters you like, but with my recipe here you can only make 6 cookies. If you want to make 12, you need to double your ingredients both for cookie base and icing sugar.)

◎rolling pin

◎baking paper

◎two balance rulers for baking

Things needed to decorate:

◎one normal brush

◎one finest brush,

◎sugar crystal particles,

◎8 pastry bags( or plastic bags if you do not have them)

◎icing dryer

◎sugar beads

◎a mug

◎a pair of tweezers,

◎carving knife

◎granulated sugar

◎icing decoration pin.

Let’s get started!

Part I: How to make cookie base?

Steps:

1: Soften the butter to the extent that it can be pressed by your fingers. Add icing sugar and salt, then whisk them on medium speed about 3-5 minutes to make them light and fluffy.

 

2: Add the egg twice, beat again until fluffy.

 

3: Add flour and baking powder, then mix them into a smooth dough with your hands or a chef's machine. (If you feel it is too sticky, you can sprinkle a little powder and continue kneading.)

4:Divide the whole dough into two parts.

5:Lay a piece of baking paper on the countertop, then put one dough on it. Position two balance rulers each side as the picture shows. Press the dough a little bit to make it flatter and easy to be rolled.

6:Cover the dough with other piece of baking paper, then roll.

7:Sprinkle flour evenly on the surface of the dough and spread it evenly by hand.

Tips:

1.Before baking, the dough must be kneaded until it is firm and air is removed, so that it is not easy to bulge during baking.

2.It is not easy to knead when the weather is too hot, so that the surface of the dough is easy to get oil.

3.Choose to use a pair of balance rulers with the thick of 5 mm or anti-stick rolling pin to roll the dough rather than rolling it with only a rolling pin. They will help you to get 5mm thick cookies which are perfect for baking and can hold their shapes.

Part II: How to cut out cookies?

With the dough ready and rolled to the thick of 5mm we need, then it comes to the step of cutting out. Some choose to chill the whole dough 2 hours before rolling, because chill will help cookies to hold shape. While I did not chill mine dough because it takes too long to chill.

Since I have a small kitchen with a small countertop, so I cut the whole dough into two and then rolled them. Another reason for me to divide it into two is that in that way it is easier to roll. If your kitchen countertop is big enough and you don’t mind rolling them takes much energy, you don’t need to separate the whole dough into two.

Now! Let’s cut out cookie with our favorite cookie cutters! Follow the pictures to cut out your cookies.

Steps:

  1. Put the cutter on the top of the dough, and press it hard. Then move the cutters until you see the shape of the cutter showed out.
  2. Remove the unneeded dough.
  3. Put the six cookies into your freezer and freeze them for 5 minutes.

Part III: To bake.

  1. Remember to preheat your oven 150 ℃ for 5 minutes.
  2. Put a piece of baking mat on the baking sheet. Then put your cookie on it.
  3. Position the baking sheet in the middle of the grill.
  4. Bake them with oven temperature 300 F. (150 ℃) for 20-25 minutes.
  5. When the baking is done, take out the cookie to let them cool down.

To save time, we can make icing whiling waiting for the cookies to be baked.

Part V: How to make icing?

With all the ingredients for icing and the tools mentioned in the preparation part, welcome to the part of making icing!

To make the white base icing first!

Steps:

  1. Add protein powder to warm water and stir evenly without particles.

  1. Add powdered sugar.
  2. Stir into a white semi-liquid liquid like smooth silk.The basic meringue is ready.
  3. Add food coloring to the mixture a few drops at a time and stir until you get the desired color.

Tips:

  1. Make sure you have the natural food coloring. This makes your cookie safe for your kids to eat.
  2. Take out a mug and cover it with a pastry bag, then put the icing into the bag. Make a dot at the end of each bag to make sure icing can not go out when we decorate the cookies with it.
  3. Add one or two more drops of coloring if it’s color is too light. Add more icing sugar if it is to soft.

Part IV: Finally ,time to decorate!

While we are making the icing, the cookies are ready. So perfect! Now, it comes the most artistic part: decoration.You can start decorating with any cookie you like.I will start my decoration with Santa Claus.

There are tricks for decoration, too.

Tips:

  1. To stop the icing from getting out of the lines, always start to draw lines along the
  1. Then fill the inside.
  2. Remember to put it to the dryer each time you finish filling the color.
  1. The trick to make the snow on the tree or the white fluffy part of a sock or hat realistic is to sprinkle granulated sugar on the icing. Then use a brush to brush off the granulated sugar in the green part.
  2. Use a carving knife to cut off the excess frosting.
