NFL free agency: Browns re-sign Tony Brown II

The Cleveland Browns have re-signed special teams ace Tony Brown II.

The cornerback is entering his eighth season in the NFL and second season with the Browns. Brown spent the early part of the season on the Browns’ practice squad, before signing to the active roster in October. Brown finished the season with five tackles and a forced fumble.

Brown had a humble season as the Browns’ special teams unit cratered. The team struggled to adapt to the dynamic kickoff rule. The special teams unit was one of the worst in the league. The Browns ran a vanilla scheme funneling runners to the outside, relying on a swarm of tacklers to bring the returner down. The team must radically change their philosophy next season. Hopefully, Brown can help the team find a new identity on special teams.

The Browns moved on from struggling special teams ace Mike Ford Jr. to commit to Tony Brown. He is known for his enthusiasm and energy, two traits greatly missing from the team. Hopefully, Brown can inject toughness into a unit desperately missing it.
