Drake women’s basketball team beats Illinois State in Missouri Valley Tournament opener


Katie Dinnebier and Anna Miller combined for 43 points to lead the Drake women’s basketball team to a 75-69 victory over Illinois State on Friday at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Evansville, Ind.

The 4-seed Bulldogs (22-10) will play 1-seed Murray State in a semifinal at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Drake held Illinois State without a field goal (0 for 9) for the final 3:32 of the game. The Bulldogs outscored the Redbirds 23-16 in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory.

Dinnebier, the Missouri Valley Player of the Year, finished with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists. Miller had 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Drake won the game with 3-point shooting. The Bulldogs made 13 of their 28 attempts from long range, while Illinois State was 4 for 18 from distance. Dinnebier and Miller each made four 3-pointers.

Dinnebier played all 40 minutes for Drake. Shannon Dowell led Illinois State with 30 points.
